Query fan-out: one question, dozens of hidden sub-questions.
AI Mode and AI Overviews no longer run one search. They shatter your query into a swarm of related questions, answer each one separately, then stitch the results into a single cited paragraph. BotSEO rebuilds that swarm and tells you how many of those questions your site actually answers.

What is query fan-out?
Query fan-out is the mechanism Google AI Mode uses to handle a search. Instead of firing a single query at the index, the engine generates a large number of related ones in parallel: rephrasings, implicit sub-questions, comparisons, follow-ups a curious reader would ask next. It retrieves sources for each, then assembles one written answer and cites the pages it leaned on. One search becomes a tree of derived queries. Ranking first on the head keyword no longer guarantees you appear in the answer, because the passage that quotes a source may be answering a sub-question you never wrote about.
How the fan-out works
Three stages separate the question a user types from the answer the model prints. The middle one is where your visibility is won or lost.
The starting question
Someone asks AI Mode something broad, in natural language, usually far longer and more specific than a classic search box query.
The split into sub-questions
The engine does not run one search, it runs dozens in parallel. It decomposes the request into derived queries, both the ones stated out loud and the ones merely implied.
The cited synthesis
The model gathers the best answer to each sub-question and cites its sources. Missing from a single sub-question means missing from a slice of the answer.
Rebuild the fan-out behind your keywords
BotSEO starts from the queries that matter to your business and reconstructs the tree of sub-questions AI Mode generates around them. For each one it checks whether your site gives a clear, quotable answer. You get a coverage score and the exact list of sub-questions where you are absent.
- The sub-questions actually generated from your key queries
- The ones your site already answers, and the ones you leave to others
- A coverage score per query and per page
- The pages to create or extend to close the gaps
- The sub-questions where a competitor is cited instead of you
Coverage is decided page by page
Fan-out is not settled at site level. A model cites a passage, and that passage sits on one specific URL. BotSEO maps each of your pages to the sub-questions it covers, so you can see which pages keep their promise, which leave holes, and where a single new page would capture a whole cluster of unanswered queries.
See who is taking your answers
Only a handful of sources get cited on each sub-question. BotSEO compares your coverage with your competitors', sub-question by sub-question. You spot the ones where a rival is quoted in your place, the ones nobody covers yet, and you prioritize the content that will move you into the answer.
Why fan-out changes the job
As long as a search returned ten blue links, targeting the right keyword was enough. With fan-out, one search multiplies into sub-questions and the final answer can pull a different source for each. Visibility stops being a rank on a term and becomes a share of the questions you cover.
That is the logic behind answer engine optimization: give the model a clean, quotable answer for every intent, not just for the head term. Classic ranking still matters, because AI Mode leans heavily on pages that already perform in organic results.
From keyword to intent
- One page answering a cluster of sub-questions beats ten thin pages.
- Short, structured answers get quoted more easily than long build-ups.
- Covering the follow-up questions keeps you present through the whole conversation.
Questions about query fan-out
Is query fan-out an official Google term?
Google has described AI Mode as issuing multiple related searches on your behalf rather than a single query, and the industry settled on "query fan-out" to name it. It is a description of observed behavior, not a setting you can inspect or switch off.
How is this different from AI Overviews?
Fan-out is the mechanism, AI Overviews and AI Mode are two surfaces built on it. An AI Overview sits above the classic results and answers in a few lines. AI Mode is a full conversational surface and fans out much more aggressively. Both pick their sources the same way.
How do I optimize for query fan-out?
Answer the widest possible set of sub-questions around your topics: a direct answer at the top of each section, definitions, comparisons, verifiable numbers, and the follow-ups people ask next. Rather than spinning up thin pages, build complete ones that cover an entire cluster of derived queries.
Does fan-out replace classic SEO?
No. AI Mode draws heavily on pages that already rank well in organic results, so the fundamentals still pay. Fan-out auditing adds a layer on top: it checks that you also cover the sub-questions, not only the head keyword.
How does BotSEO audit a fan-out?
It reconstructs the sub-questions generated from your key queries, checks page by page which ones your site answers, computes a coverage score and compares the result with your competitors. You end up with a list of gaps to close and sub-questions to win back.
